Panuelo: Saribuhay Ng Sierra Madre
Description
We are so excited to introduce our first ever panuelo design by @Alagaatsining, inspired by the beautiful biodiversity of the Sierra Madre.
At 500 kilometers long, the Sierra Madre is the longest mountain range in the Philippines, it spans 10 provinces, three regions, and protects the 50 million lives in Luzon. It has been called the backbone of Luzon for a reason. Aside from the way it stretches along the eastern coast of Luzon like a spine keeping the country upright, its true function is to act as nature’s shield against the onslaught of super typhoons and storm surges from the Pacific Ocean before reaching the central island. While it doesn’t stop typhoons in their path, it can reduce its strength and absorb the worst of it.
This is the home of hundreds of native wildlife species, many of which are unique to the Philippines including the Philippine eagle, Luzon Bleeding-Heart, Ground Warbler, Rafflesia Philippinensis, Tayabak, and even indigenous peoples like Agta.
Human activity has always been the greatest threat to this planet, and the Sierra Madre is no exception. Illegal—and legal—mining, deforestation, and construction on its land are slowly chipping away at Luzon’s biggest natural shield.
It’s time for us to save the Sierra Madre before it’s too late. Let us continue the conversation on why we must value and preserve it for the next generation.
