These simple, pleated masks of 100% cotton, hand-loomed textile are from a 100 year-old weaving enclave in Baguio, in the northern region of the Philippines.
The one with red and beige stripe is a weave that originates from Paracelis Mountain Province. The helix-like structure refers to the lightning god, who is also known to be the messenger god. This symbol is used to signal man's efforts to reach their superior gods, as one would need the help of the messenger god to talk to the higher gods.
The one with the bold green and yellow stripes is a weave pattern attributed to a small ethnic group also from the northern Cordilleras region called the Kalanguya. Read more about Kalanguya people here.
This piece comes in two sizes, there is a 1” difference only in the length of the elastic ear straps. Each face mask was handcrafted by Master Lita and the VINTA Gallery team in our atelier in the Philippines.
$20 from each mask purchase will go toward PAGASA, a fast-moving, on the ground effort in Metro Manila and the surrounding hinterland that is providing survival survival packs to people affected by the typhoon.
Before you put on the mask, please keep the following in mind:
- WASH THE MASK FIRST. WASH IT BY HAND WITH DISH SOAP, AND HANG TO DRY.
- Wearing a mask does not, in any way, substitute for staying home. Do not think you can now do non-essential activities because you are wearing a mask. Stay home.
This mask is not completely sealed once it is on your face. It does NOT, by any means, completely protect you from getting sick. The same rules still apply: do not touch your face with unwashed hands, and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. You can add a layer on the inside for extra protection. (See this article for options.)
- Wash the mask often, ideally after each use.
